Celebrating Mother’s Day: A Bond of Love and Gratitude
Mother’s Day is a holiday with deep significance in modern society, dedicated to honoring and celebrating the love and unconditional sacrifice of mothers worldwide. In Mexico, this celebration has become one of the most important, not only for the joy experienced on that day but also for its social significance.
What is Mother’s Day?
Mother’s Day is a special occasion dedicated to honoring and recognizing the invaluable role of mothers, grandmothers, and maternal figures in our lives. It is a moment to express love, gratitude, and appreciation for all the care, guidance, and unconditional support they provide. In this celebration, foundations in Mexico, such as the Fundación Letty Coppel, play an important role in contributing to social support for marginalized communities. Through programs and services designed to empower mothers and their families, these organizations significantly contribute to the construction of a compassionate and equitable society.
Where is Mother’s Day celebrated?
Although this celebration is globally recognized, each country observes it on a different day according to its traditions and beliefs about the maternal figure. In many places, such as the United States, Canada, and much of Europe, Mother’s Day is celebrated on the second Sunday of May. Meanwhile, in Mexico, the date has remained May 10th for several years. Although it was not always the case, there is a historical context that made it possible.
Why is it celebrated in Mexico on that day?
In multiple cultures, the month of May is the perfect time to pay tribute to fertility goddesses according to pagan beliefs. In Mexico, this month honors the Virgin Mary, and many consider this as one of the origins of the choice of the day. However, it is also said that it was the wife of a priest in Oaxaca who chose this date under the influence of other countries.
May 10th is when people take the opportunity to celebrate, pamper, and support mothers. This choice dates to the past century, specifically to the year 1920 when Mother’s Day was instituted in Mexico as an initiative to recognize the importance of women’s role in society, especially as mothers and wives. Since then, this date has become one filled with love, traditions, and displays of affection towards Mexican mothers.
What activities are carried out on Mother’s Day?
Most families choose to organize family gatherings, breakfasts, or special parties where mothers are honored with gifts, flowers, and heartfelt cards. In schools and institutions of different levels, special events are held where children express their love and gratitude through crafts, gifts, activities, and performances.
How do we celebrate at the Fundación Letty Coppel?
Foundations in Mexico play a crucial role in carrying out various social assistance programs, especially for mothers.
The Fundación Letty Coppel reaffirms its commitment to the well-being of Mexican mothers not only on this day but 365 days a year. Firstly, we have social assistance centers in Mexico where mothers in difficult situations have access to psychological, basic medical, and nutritional care. We also offer workshops on self-employment and psychopedagogy to provide tools for their children. Additionally, we provide recreational activities for elderly mothers.
In terms of health and in coordination with the Municipal DIF of Los Cabos and Mazatlán, the Fundación Letty Coppel conducts campaigns, talks, and conferences on self-examination and self-care, aiming to raise awareness among women on this crucial topic while breaking taboos and promoting a culture of prevention and treatment of cancer in women.
Furthermore, thanks to the close collaboration with the coordination of the Women’s Institute of Cabo San Lucas and Mazatlán as a social assistance organization in Mexico, we support women whose circumstances do not allow them to live and develop to their fullest potential, as they live under the specter of violence and the constant threat of hunger, abandonment, and misery.
With a steadfast commitment to providing a better quality of life for Mexican women and mothers, we are on a path of work to create many more facilities. If you wish to learn more about our social work, please check here.
